MUSIC AT ST. ALBAN'S CATHEDRAL |
 |
The music
program at the cathedral consists of the Cathedral Choir, the
Cathedral Handbell Choir and the newly instituted Youth Choir. The
main choir sings at all Sunday masses, and occasionally at weddings
and funerals. The Handbell choir plays on festive occasions during
the liturgical year. The youth choir sings at services when
prepared and appropriate.
The Cathedral Choir rehearses each Thursday evening from 7:00PM -
8:30PM in the choir room. During special events of the liturgical
year, additional rehearsal are held after Mass on Sundays. These
extra rehearsals are only held for events such as Advent Lessons &
Carols, Christmas Masses and Epiphany Lessons & Carols, Ash
Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday Tenebrae and Easter Masses.
No
audition is necessary, no particular musical training or exposure to
choral music is required - just a desire to come out and sing some
of the beautiful music composed for the liturgy of the Anglican
worship. All music, vestments and any other materials are
provided.
We
encourage all who are willing to participate in this endeavor to
join us. The Anglican tradition is integrally bound with beautiful
music - and we are dedicated to continuing that tradition in this
cathedral.
Cathedral Handbell Choir
The
Cathedral Handbell Choir meets each Tuesday evening from 7:00PM -
8:15PM in the choir room. The Handbell Choir consists of at least 8
members in order to evenly distribute the bells between ringers. We
have 3 octaves of handbells (27 bells) and, ideally, would like to
have no more than 3 bells played by one person.
The
Handbell Choir plays at most festive days during the liturgical
year. No audition is necessary and musical knowledge is not a
prerequisite - just a time to have some camaraderie, fun and
exercise. Music is provided.
The
Handbell Choir is and has been a tradition in the Anglican Church
for centuries. It is our goal to maintain this age-old tradition in
this cathedral.
Cathedral Youth Choir
The
Cathedral Youth Choir meets as an "assembly" period before Sunday
school classes on Sunday mornings at approximately 9:00AM.
This choir
is designed to involve and create a "feeder" program for young
people to eventually discover and participate in the music of our
church. No audition is required and music will be provided. We
endeavor to involve this choir in services whenever possible during
the liturgical year.
Through
the efforts of support, enthusiasm and participation from members of
the congregation, we will be able to provide music in keeping with
the tone and level that should be expected of music in an Anglican
Cathedral.
FRIENDS OF THE CHOIRS FUND
The "Friends of the Choirs" fund was created to
provide additional funds to be used at the discretion of the
Choirmaster to enhance and develop the Cathedral, Bell, and Youth
choirs.
If you are interested in contributing please write
"Friends of the Choirs Fund" on the memo line of your check or if
you wish you may contribute cash by placing your contribution in an
envelope marked in the same manner and place them in the alms basin
on any Sunday.
Remember this is a yearlong project. Your
contribution is tax deductible and greatly appreciated. This fund,
as is the case with all others, is under the audit oversight of the
Vestry.
